Most homeowners think all roofs are the same. We all see houses, and never think anything beyond a shingle on the roof. But we put a lot of time into houses and protecting our assets. Why would we neglect the most important protecting feature of our house, the roof. Here in Georgia, we don’t commonly receive much snow, but we do get a lot of rain and hail in the spring seasons. Hail damage is #1 cause of roofing damage in the Southeast, especially North Georgia cities outside of Atlanta. Recently we performed a job for a family in Calhoun, GA. They had lived in the house for 2 years, and began noticing brown water-spots on the ceiling in the master bedroom. We sent out our roofing specialist to take a look. Within minutes of the inspecting the roof, we found missing shinlges, damaged shingles, missing gutters, and the list goes on. There was a storm in March of 2019 that damaged a lot of house in the Calhoun, GA area, including this family. The young couple were afraid to file an insurance claim, in fear of their premium increasing. THIS IS A MYTH! Most homeowners are unaware they can file up to 3 claims in 2 years, without an increase in your premiums. And no matter what insurance companies proclaim, they want good healthy roofing systems in order to protect the rest of the house, which they are insuring. Damaged roofs are the #1 approved claimed in the United States, next to auto, for this reason. Needless to say Hero Restoration walked them through the whole process. Our inspector was there when the home owners called the insurance claim in. He was there when the insurance adjuster came. He was there when the roofers started the project. He was there after they finished repairing the roofing. And he was there when they had question. Now these homeowners have a brand new roof, color-matched to their big new porch they just constructed.

The hardest part was picking out the new shingles for the roof. We pointed them to one of our most trusted brands, Owens Corning, a leader in manufacturing and distributing roofing material systems. After they chose a beautiful, designer look, the rest was easy. Shingles are mostly constructed of asphalt with dome tar-like substances to make it stick together. Shingles overlap one another from top to bottom, allowing for water to seamlessly flow into the gutter. Most people don’t look at the color of their roof, but Owens Corning offers a slew of colors with extended warranties, in order to protect your house against the elements. Keep in mind, at Hero Restoration, we partner with the best roofer and suppliers to perform top of the line roofing repairs across the state of Georgia. Reach out to us, and have a specialist come by for a Free inspection.

Roof Maintenance

Roofing is, no doubt, the most vulnerable part of the any house. Up against the force of nature, the roof has a load to carry. There are several factors to look at when maintaining your property. The roofing system should be first on the list. It protects the entire housing structure against the elements like wind, rain, and hail. Not only does it keep these elements from crashing into the living room, roofing protects the integrity of the structure itself. No roof, then no house. At least not for long. Since water is the most damaging natural force in nature, naturally, we should give attention to preventing its conquest for destruction. The best way to protect your investment, your house, is proper roof maintenance. Its more economical to maintain a roof, than to set out on a roof repair journey.

Water Damage

Lets put emphasis on water damage and focus on how to prevent it. All people have in some shape or form, has experienced water damage. Whether it be a wooden article left out in the rain, or a spill inside the house on the new hardwood floor. Its highly likely that every person has left their car windows down during a rain storm. We’ve all done it. Forget the windows are down. Hear the rain coming. And in a split second remember they were rolled down. Heart starts racing, sprinting to the car like its on fire. If this is the way the world reacts to protecting the inside of the car, then we should take roof care and maintenance even more serious. It hard to imagine, knowing there’s a leak in the roof, then racing to spread a tarp over the shingles to keep the rain from coming inside and ruining the interior. The issue is, people don’t always know there’s a leaking roof until the interior has water damage and mold has grown in the walls. Before saying “insurance will pay for it”, lets look at what to expect first.

Insurance Claims

Homeowner insurance companies want to protect your roof because they are covering more under the roof than the roof itself. Flooring, cabinets, furniture, collectibles. You name it, they protect it. The roof has to be in great shape. But, you can void the roofing warranty by not properly inspecting and maintaining the roof. If an insurance inspector comes to inspect for water damage, and the flashing (metal piece for protection around windows, chimneys, joint areas) is bad, then no dice. They will not cover the indoor property, or they will only give you a minimal amount. If the gutters are clogged up and water is resting on the roof, then no internal coverage. That’s why its imperative to have a proper inspection of the roof, usually bi-yearly, by a professional, such as Hero Restoration.

Professional Care

As homeowners, we think we know best, but there are things we can’t see with the untrained eye, that professionals can. Roofing contractors such as Hero Restoration use drones to fly high above the house to get a good look at the peaks and roof decking. Naturally roofing contractors spot out damage that can’t be seen from the ground. Inside the house, there could be a small leak that has settled into the attic. Experienced contractors know exactly where to search to find those leaks. This comes from years of roof repair and installations. Trapped moisture creates a disasters waiting to happen. Debris build-up in gutters must be removed quickly before moisture is allowed to back up in the shingles, or flashing, or roof valley.

Let’s be honest, when a contractor is offering to come out to a house for free and inspect for damage, why not take advantage of it. Hero Restoration has been serving the North Georgia and Atlanta area since 2010. Hero Restoration is credited with completing hundreds of roof inspections and roof repair. They use only the top branded materials such as Owens Corning to guarantee the work.

It goes without saying that your roof is the most important part of the house. Even our early ancestors understood this. When out in the wilderness, needing shelter from the elements, the first first looked for was a roof of some kind. Roofs protect us from harsh weather, particularly rain and snow. All bad weather comes from above and pours down on top of us. So I think its agreed upon that the roof is the most necessary part of the house. But what can we expect to get out of a new roof? Shelter, and the ability to save on unnecessary cost associated with leaks from storm damage.

Roofing, everyone has it. Well, everyone that lives in the United States at least. In the winter months, there’s a lot of worry when it comes to the weather. But maintaining a warm, toasty home is the most logical concern. As we all know, heat rises above cooler air, making the upper levels of your house more warm, especially up close to the ceiling or roof. Insulation is used in most all homes to achieve the maximum output of the furnace. Insulation is inserted between the rafters, and in the attic, to insulate the house to keep the hot air from escaping. It only makes sense to protect your roof, which protects the insulation, in order to trap that warm and keep it form escaping.

How do you know if you have a secure, well-fortified roofing system in your house? Most people assume their roof is in great shape, but upon closely inspecting it, you will find that there are a lot of cracks and crevasses that allow heat and cool air to escape the house, resulting in a higher power bill. At Hero Restoration, we will gladly come out and perform a free inspection on your roof to see if there’s any damage. Roofing damage is overlooked the majority of the time since there aren’t any initial warning signs, until you begin to notice brown, water spots on the interior ceiling. By this time, you can expect to find a noticeable amount of damage inside the attic and in the walls. Hail damage is a huge proponent for roofing damage. As hail rains down on your house, the heavy ice balls puncture the shingles that encompass the roof as a whole. It can also damage the 15 lb felt paper that acts as a insulation between the shingles and roofing plywood. It can be months and even years before you see or notice any visible damage. Who would want to live in a house for months or years, with mold growing in the wall? This is exactly what happens. In March of 2019, we experienced a high amount of hail output that damaged roofing all over the state of Georgia. Insurance claims can handle these situations with no cost to you, except for the deductible, usually around $1000.

So, naturally, as your roof continues to take damage from the weather, you create unwanted gaps for warm air to escape. But Hero Restoration is available to come out for FREE and inspect your roof way before you see any damage. Our certified inspectors are trained to spot even the most intricate damage and aging. Call or email us to set up a free appointment, especially before the winter season brings in tons of moisture and sometimes snow. We continue to service all of Northwest Georgia, including Calhoun, Dalton, Rome, Cartersville and the Blue Ridge Mountains area. Stay Warm!

What are the common parts of a roof?

Roof Ridge: This is also known as the “peak”, meaning the highest point of the roof, where 2 planes meet. Think of a mountain peak.

Ridge Vent: This is a horizontal lining underneath the Roof Ridge. It fills in the crack, allowing humid air to vent out of the attic.

Flashing: This is a metal used around joint openings such as chimneys or skylights. It protects these openings against water intrusion.

Hip: The hip on a roof is the intersection of two roof planes that meet to form a sloping ridge running from the peak to the eave. Hip and ridge shingles are specifically designed for this part of a roof.

Roof Deck: The roof deck is the structural foundation base for the roof system and is usually made of wood or plywood.

Roofing Underlayment: Roofing underlayment is a layer of material, usually synthetic or felt, that adds extra protection on top of the roof deck and under the shingles. Synthetic underlayment helps repel moisture and provides protection against water infiltration. Synthetic underlayment is becoming a popular material choice over felt due to proven water-resistance performance and long-lasting durability.

Roof Valley: The roof valley is the V-shaped intersection between two sloping roofs joining at an angle to provide water runoff.

Laminated Architectural Shingles: Laminated architectural asphalt shingles contain more than one layer of tabs to add dimension, performance and durability to a roof. Architectural shingles are sometimes referred to as three-dimensional shingles or laminated shingles. The opposite of architectural shingles are three-tab shingles, which are produced as a single layer of tabs and appear flat or without the dimension of a laminated shingle.

Roof Gable: A roof gable is the triangular section of the outer wall at the peak of the roof between a sloping roof and eave. A roof gable is sometimes referred to as a rake.

Metal drip edge: Metal drip edge is a narrow strip of noncorrosive metal used at the rake and eave to help manage dripping water.

Dormer: A dormer is a raised section of the roof. Dormers commonly contain a window that projects vertically through the slope in the roof.

Ice and water barrier: An ice and water barrier is a self-adhered waterproofing material installed along eaves, valleys, side walls, and other sensitive areas to protect against ice damage and wind-driven rain.

Eave: An eave is the lower border of the roof that overhangs the wall usually located in the first three feet of a roof.

Undereave vent: Undereave vents are intake vents located under the eaves of the roof that help draw cool dry air into the attic.
